Menu for Week Starting 7/4/2016

With the 4th of July holiday this week I have a vacation day so I thought it would be a great day to smoke a brisket. It also fits in with trying to save electricity by cooking out. The brisket will also come up later in the week. This week we will be doing some slow cooker meals.

This last week we actually began to see our efforts to save electricity reflected in our bill. Yay 🙂

A week in review – #recipes in our #menu

Again this week we combined our “Summer Electric Plan”  with a Theme Week. This time it was Asian, really it turned out to be Thai.

We had some really good dishes. I especially liked the Slow Cooker Thai Chicken Soup. It reminded me of another Thai soup I really like. By the end of the week though we had a small rebellion 🙂 After two weeks of “Theme Weeks” the family (me included) were ready for ‘regular food’ so we skipped the last dish Kowloon Chicken. It was just as well since we had run out of chicken anyway. We enjoyed the ‘Theme Week’ idea. we tried a lot of new dishes we probably never would have. However, it should probably only be done for one week at a time.

Grocery Shopping while #budgeting

As mentioned in several of our recent blog entries we have started altering our cooking methods to try and adjust to the inevitable rise in our electric bill as summer gets along.

Altering our cooking methods though, is only one way we try and budget for those inevitable rises the electric bill. No matter what we do inside the house the temperatures will rise outside and so will the electric bill. This is a known seasonal happening and must be properly dealt with to stay on our household budget.

With this inevitable seasonal increase how can one stay on the over all budget? Continue reading “Grocery Shopping while #budgeting”

Menu for Week Starting 6/27/2016

This week is also one of our “Theme Weeks.”

This week is Eastern Asian theme week. A good number of our dishes ended up hailing from Thailand.

As before our menu consists of several slow cooker meals and some quick stove top dishes so that we don’t heat the house during peak electric rates.

A week in review – #recipes in our #menu

We had fun with our menu this week. Really we did.  This week we combined our “Summer Electric Plan”  with a Latin based Theme Week. We even got a great recipe submission from our friend in Spain, Natascha. She runs her own blog  Natascha’s Palace  give it a look.

The goal of the “Summer Electric Plan” is to focus on cooking methods that don’t heat up the interior of the house. This worked well with the “Latin Theme Week” too.

The Right Spice — Your Kitchen Prescription

When we first started cooking we received a wonderful give of a spice rack fully loaded (actually a couple of them).

They were a loving and wonderful gift. Albeit, completely mysterious. It might as well have been an alchemists chemistry set.

As nice as it was it didn’t tell us what spice goes with what cuisine.

Take a look at this wonderful article for a nice beginners guide to spices Continue reading “The Right Spice — Your Kitchen Prescription”

A week in review – #recipes in our #menu

This we are really trying to get into the swing of our “Summer Electric Plan.” The goal of the “Summer Electric Plan” is to focus on cooking methods that don’t heat up the interior of the house. Primarily, using Grilling, Crock Pot, Quick Stove top, and Microwave cooked dishes.

Menu for Week Starting 6/20/2016

This week is our first “Theme Week.”

We would like to thank Natascha, a Canadian English teacher living in Spain, for her submission. The theme is Latin food. It includes recipes from Latin America (Mexico, Central and South America). We also are trying to limit these recipes to energy efficient cooking methods to fit into our “summer rates” menu planning.

Natascha gave us our dinner for Wednesday night, Fish escabeche (Hot marinated fish).

Natascha also has her own blog that we follow, Natascha’s Palace, where she posts many other delicious recipes. It’s a site well worth visiting.

This week we will be making several slow cooker meals so that we don’t heat the house during peak electric rates. The Fish escabeche (Hot marinated fish) isn’t one of those meals. However, fish cooks extremely quick on the stove top and the vegetables are only lightly cooked so that they still maintain their fresh crunchiness. So it qualifies as a quick stove top meal. It sounds delicious. I’m personally very excited to give it a try.
